'VCS Election Question Time Events'

Leading up to the election, six events were held around the county Taking place throughout April using the familiar ‘Question Time’ format tried and tested by the BBC, events were held in the High Peak, Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Derbyshire Dales, Mid Derbyshire and South Derbyshire. In an effort to ensure project impartiality, events were only coordinated events only where there was the support of all the candidates standing in that constituency.

Each event was organised in partnership with the local Council for Voluntary Service.

Questions, sent to the candidates in advance, were wide ranging. Some were related to specific issues such as, “What more can the British Government do to counteract global warming?”, whilst others focused on issues affecting the sector generally, including “Given that all parties are placing more emphasis on working with the sector… how does your party plan to resource and manage this increased activity in the face of public spending cuts?”.

More than 200 people attended from across the county and enjoyed the opportunity to meet all of their local candidates before voting in the election.

In particular, the Derbyshire Dales event, organised in partnership with Amnesty International, had an exceptional turn out, with standing room only at St. Joseph’s Hall in Matlock.

“On the whole”, says Claire, “the events went very well and received some very positive feedback. People commented that they were well organised, informative and a great opportunity to properly engage with the democratic process. And, at the end of the day, that is how it should be!”

What is Community Cohesion?

Willersley Castle, November 6th 09.

Community Cohesion has been described as the glue that binds a community together, it enables everyone to feel included no matter what their ethnic, cultural, social, econmic, political or other background. Community groups and their activities are part of what makes that glue stronger. Representatives of 40 different groups attended this event to hear about how Community Cohesion fits with the LAA, how the Derbyshire Partnership Forum are planning to tackle it and commented on their draft strategy.  It was great to see that most of the groups represented were from Parish planning groups and Village hall committees, both pivotal forums for bringing communities together.

Personalisation

Hulland Ward Community Hall, 30th September 09

The governments personalisation agenda could radically change the way that health and social care is funded and delivered. Potentially, it puts the budget for care into the servcie user's hands. 40 people came to the event, 30 of who represented frontline voluntary or community organiastions and heard speakers from the County Council, a service user  and a representative from an organisation from Lincolnshire which is supporting frontline groups there to adapt to the changes. The event was given an excellent evaluation by all who attended and has led to demand for further health and social care forums for the Southern half of the county. Watch this space!

Event to look at the draft NI 7 action plan

Coney Green Business Centre, Clay Cross, 1st June 09.

33 people attended the event to look at the draft plan and comment on it. Generally there was a high level of support for the actions identified in the plan. Some common themes came up in each of the workshops which show support for actions which could impact on a number of different issues. A ‘quick and dirty’ prioritisation exercise revealed that people are still most concerned about relationships with funders, the kind of funding coming into Derbyshire, where and what it gets spent on and how it is administered and monitored. The County Council have been approached to support the development of Derbyshire Funders Forum which could give the sector a platform to begin dialogue with public sector commissioners, contractors and funders. You can download a copy of the event report and a copy of the draft plan here.

How do we create an 'Environment for a Thriving Third Sector'?

21st November at The Bridge Centre, Langley Mill.

This event looked at National Indicator 7 which has been included in Derbyshire's Local Area Agreement. It is a great opportunity for the sector to have improved relations with it's public sector partners. Whether the Derbyshire Partnership Forum supports the VCS to thrive or not will be measured by a national survey of registered charities and not for profit organisations. The Culture Board, which is a thematic partnership (or sub-group) of Derbyshire's Partnership Forum are responsible for delivering against the target and invited the Voice for the VCS project to coordinate an event to look at what the issues are in more detail.

Representatives of 47 third sector organisations joined the members of the Culture Board to hear presentations about the indicator, the size and scope of the VCS in Derbyshire, what will contribute to a thriving third sector and how good partnership working can have a positive effect on all sectors. Presentations were followed by workshops where everyone had an opportunity to discuss what has helped or hindered their organisation in regard to the following themes;

  • partnership arrangements
  • funding relationships
  • ability to influence decisions]
  • support from 2nd tier organisations

The plenary session hoped to highlight positive and practical actions which would support the sector to thrive and these will be published in a report which will be available to download from this website by the 2nd week of December 08.

Thanks to everyone that came and made such a great event - so many people attended that even The Bridge Centre's huge Main Hall was bursting at the seams!

Findings from the day will contribute to the action planning process for the indicator. If you weren't able to attend the event, or have more to contribute then please contact Claire Thornber or Diane Scott.

You can download the report from the event.
