Derbyshire LGBT+

An organisation that provides Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Specialist Support and Advocacy Services in Derby and Derbyshire. This includes Infrastructure support to other LGB&T organisations as well as delivering on core services to the LGB&T community. Also provides training, resources and support for professionals around equality and improving services to LGB&T people.

Derbyshire Friend was created in 1983, and became a registered charity over a decade later.

The main aims of the organisation are to respond to the needs of the LGB&T communities. As such these can change and vary depending on a person’s location, ability, income and so forth, we work closely with professionals as well as organisations to improve the lives and outcomes of LGB&T people their friends and families.

Derbyshire Friend has a dedicated LGB&T Centre in Derby and Satellite outreach in Swadlincote, Ilkeston and Ashbourne. One of the key areas of work is to improve links with smaller LGB&T groups with the wider VCS. This has included developing the LGB&T Network which promotes best practice, of working together, training and sharing of resources are key elements of the Network.

Located in the voluntary sector Derbyshire Friend has a strong volunteering base and both staff and volunteers work well together to improve the experience for our service users, clients and colleagues.

We provide support in Derby and Derbyshire, in summary we provide infrastructure support,  generic support, advice, advocacy and information for LGB&T people, friends, families and professionals living and working in Derby and Derbyshire.

  • Confidential One-to-One - supportive listening and support in Derby/Derbyshire
  • Confidential Helpline / Switchboard
  • Advocacy Work – including Hate Crime and Victim Support.
  • Safe Space – An LGB&T Community Centre (includes Internet Café) in Derby
  • Community Drop - in sessions and groups 10 sessions a week
  • LGB&T Youth Forum
  • Volunteering Opportunities, New Deal Placements & Back to work support
  • Health Programs
    • Smoking cessation, mental health awareness, sexual health screenings and health improvements, confidential advice on sexual health, free safer sex packs and sexual health information.
  • Free LGBT Resources and Guides
  • Room Hire for meetings, focus groups and training.
